Got a kid who’s itching to participate in ATV off-road riding with you? That’s great, but as a responsible parent, you know that there are some things to keep in mind when getting your kids ready to ride an ATV of their own. Here are some important safety considerations to take into account.

Get Kids Geared Up

First and foremost, you need to make sure that your children are wearing the right gear for riding youth four-wheelers. As an adult, you may choose to forgo certain pieces of safety gear, but your kids will need all of it. A well-fitting powersports helmet with either a pair of goggles or a full face mask is crucial for head and eye protection. Riding gloves will help them maintain their grip on the handlebars, while ankle boots will protect their feet and give them traction when they stop.

Chest plates and knee pads are recommended for younger riders as additional protection. Kids’ ATV riding attire should be close-fitting without any loose cords or draping fabric, and they should wear pants and long sleeves for skin protection.

Inspect Their ATV

Always make sure to thoroughly inspect your child’s ATV before every single ride. You never know when a low tire or a loose fastener could cause an accident. Check that the tank is full of gas, the oil is clean, the tires are aired up, and everything seems to be functioning properly.

Avoid Audiences

Kids love to show off, so they may be more likely to take undue risks if you let them have a big audience of their siblings, cousins, friends, or neighbors. Instead, start your lessons with just you and your child to help them maintain their focus and practice responsible riding.
