Riding Tips for Your Next Winter ATV Trip
While taking a winter trip with your ATV can be a lot of fun, it requires quite a bit of prep and planning. To make sure you and your vehicles are prepared for the cold, you’ll want to read through our helpful tips below. If you’re in need of any cold-weather accessories or gear, feel free to visit us here at East Bay Motorsports in Hayward, California.
Tires
Before you set out on your next winter ride be sure to take a close look at your tires. Snow is notoriously difficult to ride through, and you may need to replace those balding tires with snow tires if you don’t want to get stuck. Snow chains are also a great option for traveling through heavy wet snow where there isn’t a lot of traction.
Layer Up
To avoid catching a bad case of frostbite, you’ll need to dress warmly and layer up! Wool socks, gloves, and thermals are great for keeping warm and can help wick away sweat during your ride. Once you’ve got your thermals on, you’ll want to follow up with an insulating jacket or vest followed by a waterproof coat or windbreaker. This should help you retain body heat and keep you dry during your ride.
Maintenance
Your ATV’s engine will need a little extra care and attention before you can take it out into the elements. Start by giving your engine a quick oil change and adding fuel stabilizer to the tank to avoid moisture seeping in. We also advise topping off your antifreeze and, if your model is a bit older, replacing the spark plugs before you go.
